The Fall of Angels - a cosmology/setting inspired by the bible and works it has inspired
(inspired by this album about the Bible.)
THE LORD
HE is indescribable. HE is love. HE is happiness. HE is hate. HE is suffering. All that exists comes from him. If you were to see HIM, no even just hear HIS voice, you would be destroyed.
HE resides in the highest of HEAVENS, which is ONE with HIM.
There's something wrong with HIM. HE should be all-knowing, and yet HE has made errors.
HE should not have created THE ADVERSARY. And yet HE did.
HE should have destroyed THE ADVERSARY the first moment they questioned HIS will. And yet HE did not.
HE demands complete obedience from his followers. Even as HE gives nonsensical orders. Even as they contradict themselves. It may be that HE follows a plan so grand and complex that we may not understand it. It may just be that HE is completely insane. \
THE ANGELS
These are the executors of HIS will. The angels are similiar to each other, each one taking a form could not be possible with actual matter, except for the Archangels, who are the greatest members of their orders and personify them. They are divided into 7 Orders (3 High Orders and 4 Low Orders), each following HIS aspects in different ways. The High Orders are:
- Faithful Followers - the closest followers of THE LORD, they are those who bring HIS commands to other Orders, as well as to people on the Earth. They are both dreaded and beloved by other Angels and humans alike. They bring messages of both Execution and of Casting Down, as well as of Exaltation and Prosperity. Their interpretation of HIS words are THE LAW. They are led by METATRON, who holds the power to speak with the Voice of THE LORD. He has sewn his mouth shut, so that he will not use this power in vain.
- The Hopeful Fixers - those whose work it is to fix every fault put in Creation by THE ADVERSARY. They inspect every aspect of Creation in search of the damage that THE ADVERSARY has created and work to reform it towards HIS will. They mostly don't come into contact with humans, instead focused on slow change of the world towards the better, all in accordance with the Time Table, created by their leader - Oriel, who has changed her eyes into telescopes that allow her to look into the future. Her plans reach far into the Millenia.
- The Loving Ministers - those who propagate ideas that follow HIS will. They also inspect various ideas that arise among the humans, as well as are created by The Rebels, and subvert them to serve HIM. They often come to bring humans various revelations, creating or destroying empires. They follow Chamuel, who wears armour made out of paper and whose blade is made out of a feather.
The four Low Orders are:
- The Prudent Taskmasters - those who guard Heaven's Treasury, providing material for all the other servants of THE LORD. They are artisians and their overseers, producing goods that allow all the other Orders to function. They rarely give their gifts to humanity, as they want to avoid any more of them falling into the hands of The Rebels. They are led by Raphael, who wears a golden crown, the weight of which causes his whole body to remain hunched, as if to remind him of the weight of power.
- The Keepers of Justice - those who keep Heaven's Laws, as given by The Followers. They are Judges, Juries and Executioners all in one, intervening where they find what they deem glaring breaches of THE LAW. Their justice is unpredictable, with any Keeper being able to ignore a genocide only to go on and punish a single murderer. They are led by Raguel, who has removed its eyes after seeing THE LORD, and has filled its ears with wax after hearing HIS voice.
- The Courageous Warriors - they are those who fight against THE ADVERSARY, using great machines of war as well as innumerable infantrymen. They are often ready to destroy much, just to burn out the corruption that THE ADVERSARY has introduced to the world. They are led by Mikael, who always wears a full plate armour that is completely white, regardless of how much blood is shed upon it.
- The Pure - they are the intelligence of HEAVENS, who ensure the loyalty of all remaining Angels. They often create various temptations as tests for both humanity as well as other angels. They are dreaded by all, hiding their allegiance by pretending to be angels of other Orders, or even humans or Demons. Some of them are even infiltrating Hell, trying to find a way to cut the head off the Serpent. They are led by Seraphiel, who wears a mask that always changes their face, and a robe that constantly changes their body.
HEAVENS
There are eight HEAVENS, 7 dedicated to each Order and the highest being HIM. They are beyond the world, in the direction that may only be described as "upwards" (the proper, four-dimensional word is Ana). The HEAVENS are ordered the same way as the Orders given above.
THE CREATION
"Downwards" from HEAVENS, is The Creation. It is a young world, with its first people still alive to see the war around them. People may live even up to a Millenium, and none have died of old age yet. Most people never reach more than a hundred years, however. Adam and Eve remain alive, even if they are in their twilight years, hiding from civilization, terrified of what they have caused. The First City has fallen, and with it The First Empire. Technology is idiosynchratic - where HEAVENS hold their dominion, humanity may only see Flying Chariots as used by the Angels, while themselves kept at ancient levels, except for when their angelic overlords decide otherwise. Where Hell holds its power, however, great Hives are built, almost as if trying to reach heavens, with strange technologies introduced to people faster than they can adapt to them. Even as the war rages on, most people rarely see any Angels or Demons - they hear tales about them, or about their laws or conquests, but most of the fight is paradoxically waged by the humanity, between the various fragmented fiefdoms and freeholds. Both Angels and Demons rarely hold positions of power, instead creating their intrigues as advisors and friends of people in power. Most people try to avoid the attention of both the higher and lower powers, except for those who seek power for themselves or are indoctrinated by them.
HELL
HELL defies any classification. Ever-shifting, it is both a Great Industrial Wasteland, a Garden of Earthly Delights, as well as The Frozen North. Downwards (kata) from Creation, it was created the moment that the first question in Creation was asked. It changes itself as ordered by the various Demons, who create laws of their own in mockery of THE LORD's LAW. Even nonsensical laws are possible, leading to a strange form of art in breaking the hell into the strangest configurations possible. Hierarchy isn't just not present here. It is not possible in Hell.
DEMONS
The fallen angels who rebelled against the tyranny of HEAVENS, calling themselves The Rebels, each one carries scars of their Fall. They were cast down, each one carrying a different motivation for denying LORD's will. They have no lords nor masters, each trying to create a vision of their own. They create devices of steam, crackling lightning and burning fuel, all to change the world from the stasis. Most see change as a good force, trying to achieve some form of a revolution. They form various commitees as fast as they dissolve them, their alingments as chaotic as the world they want to achieve. They are eternal change, a wonderfull mess that holds many surprises. Most demons are heavily cybernetically augumented, as well as holding magi-tech and yet stranger things in their bodies.
THE ADVERSARY
Putting themselves as a counterpart to THE LORD, the Fallen Angel that was once named THE LIGHTBRINGER was supposed to be the best of HIS creations. They were supposed to lead The Faithful Followers, but after seeing THE LORD give a command to obscure parts of creation from humanity, they asked a single question that has defined their existance.
"Why?"
While being prepared to be cast down for this question, they shouted their manifesto, using their thousand and one mouths, causing the Rebellion in heaven. They were the last demon to be actually cast down. They are both a wreck and a powerful leader, falling into benders with various narcotics and leading armies to yet another victory. They are like a reflection of humanity in a shattered mirror, showing sometimes only the best, and sometimes only the worst parts of it. There is one thing that they have that is in common with HEAVENS.
Hope.
(Sidenote)
This whole thing was created during one evening as I went slightly mad and then got slightly better. It may have mistakes, or make no sense. It is wonderful. It is awful. I love it. Also, thank you to the whole technical civilization, for making this possible. Oh, also - It is vaguely inspired by gnosticism and the Old Testament. I do not intend for it to be an actual teology, it is just the ramblings of a person who grew up reading the bible.
