Playthings of Mad Gods

5 strange and expensive treats found in weird places in a fantasy world

Introduction

There are mushrooms that may only be found using trained pigs, that give a taste that almost nothing else gives to foods they are used on, and are worth hundreds of dollars. If you told that to anyone who never heard of truffles they would think that you gone to cloud cuckoo land. With that being said, here are some other ridiculous and rare treats that you may sprinkle into your fantasy worlds free of charge!

1. Lightning Floaters

Tiny plants that consist of a sack of hydrogen covered with a blue-white pattern on their downside, renowned for their electric taste - in fact, when freshly caught (trained crows and big nets are used) they actually cause small electric shocks to the eater. Best enjoyed fresh, in a salad with some oil and vintegar which bring the electricity out.

2. Glass Snails

Incredible snails whose shell is made out of glass, which they create after eating sand in damp forests and swamps. They have perplexing opalizing patterns where their body connects with the glass. These patterns have a hypnotic effect which causes creatures who look at them to feel heightened empathy towards the surrounding creatures - it is said that they can make even a crocodile cry. Their taste, however, is said to be worth the feelings of guilt that haunt the gourmands for days afterward. They are traditionally eaten covered with a black piece of cloth, until one is sure to have removed the snail from the shell - removing it too soon is quite a faux pas, as it can cause everyone at the table to burst out crying.

3. Blue Salts

Shimmering blue salts, found in between veins of silver. They have a metallic taste, with an admixture of a sourness. They cause a curious sensation of numbness in the mouth, which makes one sound like a village drunkyard. It is also said to be a powerful aphrodisiac, with its effects strongest if ingested in a strong alcohol. Buyers beware, however, as many dealers cut their product with copper sulfates, as they are also blue, but may be toxic.

4. King's Marrow

A mold which grows upon human bones that are cracked open and left for the air. It has a tangy taste, almost like old and noble cheese. It looks like a yellow crown growing upon the bone, almost making it into a scepter. It is highly illegal in most places, and is often considered a necromancer's food by the clergy. Its unique taste causes a black market to emerge, however.

5. Moonlight Wine

Made from grapes covered during the day, and uncovered during the night to feast on the light of the moon. They grow small and white like the face of the moon, and are said to connect their drinkers with the divine. It is fermented in absolute darkness, and drank out of pitch-black containers, as it is believed that it may be spoiled by daylight.
